Session replay without a spectacle

A library of recordings no one watches is not research. It is a cupboard of other people’s afternoons.

Colleagues talking over a laptop in a casual workplace

The Session Replay Atelier exists because product groups in the United Kingdom now have vendors that make watching cheap, and privacy teams that make watching expensive, and almost no shared rule for when a human may sit down and look.

Rage-clicks are a noisy proxy. Sometimes they mean a control that does not look like a control. Sometimes they mean a wallet sheet that failed to load and a thumb that had nowhere else to go. Treating every cluster as “frustration” is how a squad ships a tooltip instead of a repair.

Sample on purpose

We ask guests to keep two streams only: failed jobs (checkout, booking, save) at a high sample, and a thin random slice — four percent is a number we have used, not a law — so the room does not only study disasters. Everything else can be deleted on a schedule. Storage is not an argument for retention of film.

Masking fields is not optional theatre. If your consent copy names a vendor, the recording settings must match the copy. The Atelier spends an evening walking through that match; it is unglamorous and it is the ethical core of the room.

When not to watch

If the question is “how many people reach step three,” a funnel will do. Replay is for mechanism: which control, which permission prompt, which timeout. Using film to decorate a slide is a waste of other people’s time, including the people on the recording.

We also refuse replay as a performance-management tool. Watching an agent’s session to score them is outside the house. Guests who need that work will not find it here.

A smaller cupboard

After the Atelier, most circles cut their library. One London fitness app kept failed checkout plus the random slice and found a broken wallet sheet that months of “insights” had missed because nobody had a sampling rule. That story is on the voices page. It is not a promise that you will find a wallet sheet. It is a promise that we will not praise a cupboard.

If you want the longer instrumentation argument, sit the Cohort Signal Lab. Replay is a module there, not the whole Chamber.
